Asset promoting Loughborough's Disability Research event

Doctoral College announces Disability Research at Loughborough event

On 25 March, the Doctoral College will host Disability Research at Loughborough in the Sir David Davies Building (DAV1101) from 1.30-4.30pm.

Staff and students from all Schools and Professional Services are welcome, and it is free to attend.

The event, sponsored by the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence, will showcase outstanding disability (physical and mental) research at the University.

Doctoral researchers Kate Christogianni, Simon Briley, Lesley Sharpe, Chloe Blackwell, Eva Rodgers Victor Jeganathan and Tigmanshu Bhatnagar will give thought-provoking and inspiring talks on the day.

The talks will explore a wide variety of topics, including families raising children with autism, physical activity in a secure psychiatric hospital, temperature sensitivity in multiple sclerosis, and shoulder pain in wheelchair athletes.

At the event, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Steve Rothberg will announce the winner of the CALIBRE Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Award

There will also be the opportunity to hear about disability support available to staff and students at the University.

Event organiser and VC Award recipient Dr Katryna Kalawsky commented: “This new multi-disciplinary event will shine the spotlight on excellent doctoral research whilst celebrating and promoting equality, diversity and inclusion – something of utmost importance.”

Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development, Adèle MacKinlay said: “As an advocate for equality, diversity and inclusion – a central theme of the People Strategy – I’m delighted to learn more about a number of topics in the disability space from our doctoral researchers. What our research tells us will help shape the inclusive environment and culture that Loughborough prides itself on and inform our thinking for the future.”

Vice-Chancellor Robert Allison added: "Loughborough University works hard to be a welcoming, inclusive and diverse community. The Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence are prestigious, and I am delighted to see that Dr Kalawsky has used this opportunity to showcase some of the outstanding work that we have to support people with disabilities, their families and friends."

Those interested in attending can book their place here.

More information about the event, including the titles of the talks, will be provided in due course on the event’s dedicated webpage.
