National Student Money Week (3-7 February)

As part of National Student Money Week (3-7 February), the University’s Student Advice and Support Team will be based at various locations around campus next week to share their top tips for budgeting at University and also to provide more information about the money matters they can support you with.

They will have information stands in different buildings with activities revolved around money saving – including how to cook your own takeaway at home (and save pennies by doing so!) – and a quiz where you have the chance to win a £30 Amazon voucher.

The locations and dates are as follows:

  • 3 February: 12pm-2pm, West Park Teaching Hub
  • 4 February: 12pm-2pm, James France Building
  • 6 February: 12pm-2pm, The Arts Cafe (Edward Barnsley Building)
  • 7 February: 12pm-2pm, Wolfson Café

The theme of this year’s National Student Money Week is ‘Spend Healthy, Live Healthy’, so throughout the week we’ll be sharing the ways you can make better and more sustainable decisions, whilst saving money in the process.

These tips will cover areas such as eating and drinking, travelling, shopping and life at home.

Here are some quick and easy money-saving changes you can make now ready for the new semester:

  • Use the Library to your advantage: Avoid spending money on new textbooks and other study materials by making the most out of the University Library. Check out the subject guides and the Library catalogue to see what books, journals, DVDs and other materials are available to you. Alternatively, if you do want your own textbook, look for second-hand options online.
  • Join or start up your own study group: Not only can you share resources and knowledge in preparation for assessments, but you can also save money on your study snacks too by clubbing together!
  • Always use your student discount: You can get at least 10% discount on purchases at loads of shops and services across the UK; from eating out and technology, to clothes shopping and music subscriptions.
