National Student Money Week: Treat yourself without breaking the bank

These top tips will help you save money on entertainment and shopping so that you can still enjoy your free time without excessively spending.

Share the cost of streaming services

Why not share an account with your housemates? Most streaming services have an option to add multiple devices and profiles for just a few more pounds a month, the cost of which can be shared amongst you. This way you can enjoy your favourite TV shows and movies for a fraction of the price.

Visit the library

Libraries aren’t just home to books. They offer DVDs, ebooks, CDs and magazines when you sign up for a free library card. The University Library also has a variety of non-academic books available for students on the top floor.

Look up community events

Keep an eye on noticeboards, local Facebook groups, Eventbrite and Meetup for inexpensive and free events going on in the local area. From craft groups to vintage markets, there is sure to be something that appeals to you. The University also offers a host of free events for students, including LU Arts’ Happy Mondays workshops and the student-run cinema, Flix offers films for a very reduced price.

Plan shared events

Reduce the cost of activities by planning them as a group. Check whether there are group discounts available and consider car-sharing to reduce the cost of transport and petrol. This way you can share out the cost whilst still having fun, new experiences.

Buy second hand

Not only is it more environmentally friendly to buy second hand, but it is also often a cheaper alternative when buying clothes and electronic goods. You can also take part in clothes swaps – just bring along some clothes you no longer want and swap them for clothes you do.

Implement the 30/30 rule

If it costs more than £30, wait 30 hours before purchasing. This helps to reduce impulse purchases.

Don’t base your decision on brands

Often, when you buy branded items, you are paying for the brand name rather than the quality. The website Which? can help to compare prices and can help you get the most for your money.

The University’s Student Advice and Support Team are able to advise on all aspects of student finance including budgeting and saving money. Find out more information here.
