Loughborough academic leading the way on new BSI standards

Dr Mohamed Osmani, Reader in Sustainable Design and Construction, has chaired the committee working on a new set of BSI Standards.

The BS 8895 series of standards aims to improve material resource efficiency and reduce waste in the construction industry. The committee published the first two instalments of their recommendations in 2013 and 2015, with the third published in December 2019.

The most recent instalment builds on the work already published and recommends the integration of designing for material efficiency using case studies to help illustrate why these standards are needed.

Dr Osmani commented: “Environmental policies and increased awareness of the need to improve material resource efficiency and circular economy are the backdrop for clear and unified material guidance that BS 8895 offers.

“There is already a noticeable impact of the published standards and has been noted as the key reference for optimising material efficiency credit ratings in the material and waste categories of three UK and international standards: BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method), the most established and widely used environmental management system in construction; Home Quality Mark (HQM); and  New Zealand Green Building Council Homestar Standard.”

It is anticipated that there will be increased adoption of BS 8895 as construction projects move forward.
