BE is a group of Loughborough alumni and current students who aim to inspire Black people across the UK and to be a positive influence in the community. Last year, they were named ‘Top Team’ at the Charnwood Community Hero Awards for their contribution to the borough.
Their latest project is to produce a feature film, entitled Immigrant. Although commencing for filming has been delayed due to the pandemic, they are hoping to begin in 2021.
The synopsis of the film follows the life of Idy, a young migrant who has spent over a decade of his adult life in the UK. His world is turned upside down when an application for indefinite leave to remain is filled one day late. With his back against the wall and the risk of deportation, will Idy let go of the life, friends, family and home he has built for himself in the UK and return to his country of birth, or will he stay and fight for what is rightfully his?
The film hopes to tell a story of joy, pain and triumph, with the hope of creating awareness of the challenges faced by non-EU immigrants in the UK, and the numerous obstacles they face to stay in line with the changing rules around immigration.
Black Excellence is on the lookout for actors and actresses who may be interested in the project, and the group are particularly keen for Loughborough students to audition. This call-out includes actors for two of the main characters, Idy and Dapo, and the group are looking for Black males aged between 25-30 to play these parts. They are also looking for male and female actors to play other roles.
