Loughborough student paints beautiful mural for her hometown

Fine Art student, Monica Popham, has spent the last four weeks painting a mural in Gibraltar, where she lives with her family.

The mural, painted on the side of the Gibraltar Academy of Music and Performing Arts (GAMPA), is inspired by her sister who is a student there. Her artwork was chosen to feature as part of a larger project run by Gibraltar Cultural Services who are commissioning murals around ‘The Rock’ (Gibraltar’s nickname due to the limestone rock that dominates its landscape).

Monica designed the artwork on her iPad, then projected it onto the wall and drew around it. She admits that the texture and the scale of the wall made painting a little more challenging, as well as the steep hill and busy road the building resides on.

On the experience, Monica commented: “It was fantastic and although it came with many challenges such as scaffolding, road closures and 30+ degree heat, I would jump at the opportunity to do it again.”
