National Eye Health Week: Are you up to date on your sight test?

This week is National Eye Health Week, which aims to encourage people to get their eyes tested regularly.

According to Vision Matters, over two million people in the UK are living with sight loss that has a significant impact on their daily lives Half of this sight loss is avoidable.

Having a regular eye exam can help detect early signs of glaucoma, which can be treated if found at an early stage.

Sight tests can also detect other health conditions, such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

There are many things you can incorporate into your daily life that maintain eye health. These include:

  • a healthy diet
  • wearing sunglasses in bright sunlight
  • reducing excessive alcohol consumption
  • giving up smoking

More information on looking after your eyes can be found on the NHS website.

If you are a regular computer user you may be entitled to a free eye test, funded by the University. These can be booked at Sask, located at the Students’ Union, or Specsavers.
