University research group hosts World Patient Safety Day event and launches dedicated website

The School of Design and Creative Arts’ Human Factors and Ergonomics (HFE) in Health and Social Care Hub held the first World Health Organisation (WHO) World Patient Safety Day in collaboration with the Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch (HSIB) last month.

WHO has established a World Patient Safety Day to be marked annually, with an aim for all stakeholders in the health care system to work together to improve patient safety.

Loughborough University hosted the event, which included a talk from Dr Kevin Stewart, Medical Director HSIB, on the challenges of system-level national investigations in healthcare followed by a panel discussion in the afternoon.  A video taken on the day that interviews experts such as Professor Sue Hignett can be viewed here.

Due to the events’ success, plans are underway for a follow-up in 2020.

The group has also launched a new website. This has information about accredited short courses, networking events, research and expert support. Although the site is still under development, new content will be added over the next few weeks. The team is looking forward to working with colleagues across the globe to support wellbeing and systems performance in safer health and social care services.
