Take the pledge to ditch the disposables

Celebrate International Coffee Day (1 October) by contributing to a more sustainable campus and ditching the disposable.

More than 500,000 disposable cups are still used on campus each year.

Did you know if every student and staff member used five less disposable cups that would equate to 100,000 less cups being thrown away.

The Loughborough Cup is available for just £7 from all Campus Services retail outlets where a wider range of reusable cups will be introduced soon.

The rCup is another great alternative to disposables and has been created by Loughborough alumnus, Dan Dicker. Designed to last ten years, the company also offer a free replacement seal to ensure its longevity.

An added bonus is that Campus Services are introducing additional benefits as part of their new loyalty scheme and both the retail outlets on campus and high street coffee shops now offer a discount if you opt for a reusable cup.

Disposable cups are not the only waste created from our coffee - the grounds can also equate to a large amount. At Loughborough, this is being tackled with coffee grounds bins located in EHB and Martin Hall. Take a container to fill up with the grounds and use them as a face mask, a stubborn grease remover or even as compost. There is more information on all the uses for coffee grounds here.

Keep an eye on the Sustainability Twitter page as there will be more schemes introduced soon to help reduce waste from disposable cups on campus.
