Poetry lovers encouraged to attend exhibition on Carcanet Press
Poetry lovers are being invited to attend an exhibition to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Manchester-based publisher Carcanet Press.
Curated by Dr Lise Jaillant, a lecturer in English at Loughborough University, it will take place in the John Rylands Library at the University of Manchester.
The exhibition will explore three themes: Carcanet’s relationship with Arts Council England, its place within the broader UK poetry publishing landscape, and its role in publishing the work of female poets including Elizabeth Jennings and Sujata Bhatt.
The themes from the exhibition have emerged from Dr Jaillant's research project – funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) – which examines how small poetry publishers survive in the global marketplace.
Dr Lise Jaillant said: “If you’re interested in poetry, this exhibition gives you a chance to see unique materials from the Carcanet archive – including manuscripts, first editions, letters and emails. Poetry is often seen as a niche market, but in fact, poets such as Elizabeth Jennings and others are widely read.
"The exhibition explores how Carcanet Press has managed to connect poets and readers in the past fifty years.”
The exhibition will be in the Rylands Gallery until the end of March 2020.
