PhD student selected for pioneering programme aimed at supporting diversity in sports media

Hannah Thompson has been selected for the Diversification of the Sports Media programme run by the Black Collective of Media in Sport (BCOMS) and London Sport.

The programme was launched in September backed by the Mayor of London, with the aim of supporting diversity in sports media.

Hannah applied to the programme after seeing a call out on social media. She was an undergraduate at Loughborough in English and Sports Science before going on to do a master’s in Global Media and Cultural Industries.

Alongside her PhD, Hannah will take part in evening workshops led by industry experts from big companies, including Sky Sports Studios. Students will also have the opportunity to be involved in the UEFA EURO 2020 as London will be hosting seven of the games at Wembley Stadium next year.

Hannah said: “I am so proud to be a part of the 2019/2020 cohort. The call for diversity is so important and much needed in the sports media industry and this is an exciting time for my career journey.

“The programme has already provided multiple networking opportunities and has given me confidence. I hope to bring these experiences back into the Loughborough community, and I am keen to inspire other students to seek these kinds of opportunities.”
