CALIBRE celebration and Winter Awards launch

The finalists and winners of the summer’s inaugural CALIBRE Awards gathered last week to celebrate their achievements.

The lunchtime event – attended by representatives from each of the shortlisted projects – was hosted by Professor Steve Rothberg, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research).

The Awards recognise the breadth of excellent research undertaken across both the Loughborough and London campuses.

The work of the 12 shortlisted finalists reflects this diversity – spanning cutting-edge engineering, manufacturing and technology; political and literary analysis; smart business solutions; health and wellbeing; and infrastructure resilience.

Much is ongoing and conducted in collaboration with external partners across the public, private and voluntary sectors. Most, if not all, of the 12 projects have attracted external funding. Crucially, they all have the potential to deliver real-world impacts.

More than 3,100 votes were cast to decide the winners: Dr Alok Choudhary and his team from the School of Business and Economics who have developed a set of innovative analytical tools for sustainability assessment, improvement and risk mitigation within supply chains.

Professor Steve Rothberg says: “I was very pleased to be able to gather together our finalists and winning team to congratulate them all. It’s a privilege to be working alongside such innovative and talented colleagues.

“Looking forward, given the success of these inaugural Awards, our intention is to hold three rounds of themed Awards each year as a celebration of the University’s outstanding research.

“The next round of CALIBRE Awards is now open. We are seeking nominations from projects in which excellence in research – in any academic discipline – is combined with innovation from the Open Research agenda which, over the coming decade, will transform how we conduct our research.

“Nominations should be made via ADRs before Friday 25 October, and include those projects with, for example, Open Methodology, Open Data or Open Software.

“We will announce the winner of the Winter 2019 CALIBRE Awards on Wednesday 4 December at the launch event for our landmark new Research Repository – and I’m already looking forward to meeting our next group of finalists.”
