User Experience Design students shortlisted for UXUK Awards

Three masters students from the University’s School of Design and Creative Arts have been shortlisted for a national design award.

Helen Power, Pinar Dumlu and Jordan Marshall have all been named as finalists for the Best Student Project Category at the UXUK awards.

Helen’s project ‘Capsule’ is a lifelong personal assistant service delivered via an app and Alexa skills. She wanted to find a solution that encourages cohabiting millennials to see death as an active part of life and a long-term planning process rather than simply an event at the end of their life.

The app aims to provide a modular method for those who want to organise their end-of-life wishes and ‘life admin’ documents in order to simplify the process for both themselves and others after their death.

Digital-learning support tool ‘Heroes’ has been designed by Pinar for busy working fathers-to-be to empower them with the knowledge and tools they need for their transition into fatherhood.

Fellow student Jordan Marshall took a service design approach to re-conceptualise funerals to better meet the needs of bereaved relatives, particularly for those who are involved at a distance.

The resulting service, Wilo, has also been named a finalist for an international award by IXDA, a leading professional body for interaction design.

The trio hope to follow in the success of Juan Encalada, who won the award last year and previously studied the same degree at Loughborough.

Dr Val Mitchell, Programme Director of MA User Experience Design said: “We are incredibly proud of our students and their ability to design meaningful experiences in response to complex real-world issues.”
