Institute of Advanced Studies to launch ‘Water Theme’

The Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS) at Loughborough University will launch its interdisciplinary annual Theme, Water, on 13 November.

IAS aims to support collaborations between leading international scholars and encourage an interdisciplinary research environment.

The launch of the Water Theme will take place from 2pm-4pm in U.0.05. Brockington Extension and includes a presentation from Alwyn Hart, Lead Scientist for Air, Land and Water Research at the Environment Agency.

There will also be a screening of Sonia Levy’s ‘For the Love of Corals’, a film that looks at the impact of climate change on aquatic life. Levy is one of the artists in residence for the Risk-Related Radar project and she has been working closely with Dr Heather Swanson of Aarhus University who will visit Loughborough as an IAS Visiting Fellow in June 2020.

Early Career Researchers involved in water research are also invited to bring along research posters to display. Contact Laura Dale for more information.

The lead for the IAS Water Theme, Professor Paul Wood said: “Water is essential for life and the long-term sustainability of natural ecosystems and societies globally.

“The relationships between society and water are complex and encompass water in the natural environment, literary representations of water, the biodiversity it supports, management and mitigation of hydrological hazards and how individuals engage with water recreationally and in sporting arenas.

“We are really excited to be able to launch the Institute of Advanced Studies Annual Theme centred on water and host a wide range of activities and visiting fellows spanning the breadth of research across the Loughborough University campuses and Schools over the coming year.”
