Every drop counts: Do your part to reduce the amount of water used on campus

The University’s water consumption for the 2018-19 academic year was 340,428m3, which is enough water to fill our Olympic-sized swimming pool 167 times.

The Sustainability team are working with colleagues and students from across the University this year to reduce water consumption, with the most recent work on the project being the creation of three informative posters which are being placed in halls of residence.

There are some really easy ways you can reduce your consumption of water on a daily basis, for example:

  • Next time you wash the dishes, fill a sink or container with water and washing liquid instead of running the tap for five minutes. By doing so, you’ll be using 12 litres instead of 40 litres.
  • Halve your time spent in the shower. The average person spends around ten minutes in the shower, which uses more than 90 litres. By reducing this to five minutes, you could reduce this down to just 45 litres.
  • Did you know you could save up to 11.5 litres every time you brush your teeth? Choose to use a mug of water instead of running the tap for two minutes, and you’ll only use 500ml.

By actioning each of these, you could save over 80 litres every day.

The Sustainability team plan to provide further resources and information on water efficiency as the campaign progresses this year. More information on this campaign, as well as the initiatives being done to reduce the use of electricity, gas and carbon emissions at the University too, can be found here.
