Student wins scholarship in Loughborough’s twin town
A student at Loughborough University is set to study and sample the culture in Loughborough’s twin town of Schwäbisch Hall in Germany thanks to a scholarship.
The Goethe-Institut, a non-profit cultural organisation in Schwäbisch Hall, offers a young person from Loughborough the chance to visit the German town for four weeks to develop their linguistic skills.
The Mayor of Charnwood helps select the lucky student which this year is Shani-Maia Boxill-Anderson who is studying chemistry at Loughborough University.
Shani-Maia was chosen from a shortlist of nominations after being interviewed by the Mayor, Cllr Christine Harris.
The Mayor said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for a young person to sample another culture and develop their language skills. I hope Shani-Maia enjoys the experience.”
Shani-Maia commented: “I’m really grateful to have been given this opportunity to continue developing my German language skills. I started learning the language from a young age, studied the subject at A-Level and I’ve continued to learn at evening classes while I’ve been at university.
“I’m looking forward to my time in Schwäbisch Hall and studying at the Goethe-Institut and hope it will help me improve my speaking and writing skills. I’m also interested in learning more about the country’s culture.”
The course fees, board and lodgings are funded by the Institute and students are only required to cover their travel costs.
