Loughborough academics to feature in celebration of women in engineering

SAGE Journals is publishing 100 articles written by women in the run-up to International Women in Engineering Day on 23 June, and two of Loughborough’s academics have been chosen to feature.

Professor Carys Siemieniuch teaches Enterprise Systems Engineering, and Dr Ella-Mae Hubbard is a Senior Lecturer in Systems Engineering.

Their featured article, ‘From preventative to predictive maintenance: The organisational challenge’, focuses on the human challenges that come from implementing new technology in workplaces. They argue that new technology cannot be effective if the implementation process is poor. The project was funded by Innovate UK and RSSB.

On being one of the spotlight articles Dr Hubbard said: “There are some great papers on this list, it’s a fantastic compliment to be counted amongst them”.

International days, such as the International Women in Engineering Day, are important for highlighting the extensive work done by female engineers, as well as encouraging the next generation.

Professor Siemieniuch said: “Women represent a large, untapped resource. We need to unleash its talent and potential.”

Dr Hubbard added that she hopes the articles featured in the campaign reach outside of the academic community as this will help to break down stereotypes of who is and who can be an engineer.
