Loughborough heads to national finals for the second year in a row

Charlotte Ripley is the second student from Loughborough University to win the Midlands regional Women in Property Student award, putting her in the running for the national finals. These awards are open to female second-year students who are on Built Environment related courses.

Charlotte studies Architectural Engineering and Design Management at Loughborough and is currently on a work placement in Canada.

For the competition, she presented a recent project she had done which involved designing a zero-carbon community centre. Not only did she have to consider the basic design criteria of the building but also the environmental impact of it.

Her presentation also included women that inspire her, why she chose a career in construction and property and her visions of becoming a role model for the next generation of women coming into the industry.

Professionals in surveying, planning, development and engineering made up the judging panel and they were impressed with her engaging presentation and articulate interview. They described her as an “inspirational student” who was very “personable and engaging”.

The Women in Property Midlands Chairman, Kam Saini said: “These inspirational young women [the national finalists] have demonstrated the skills, commitment and ingenuity the property and construction industry will need in the future.”

As a result of winning the regional round, Charlotte will receive a trophy, a cash prize and the opportunity to be part of the mentoring programme offered by Women in Property.

Charlotte said: “I’m thrilled to have won. Women in Property is such a brilliant organisation that inspires and supports so many women in this industry and I am very proud to be a part of that.”

The Women in Property organisation aims to create opportunities and inspire women who work in the industry. The awards are a key component of this programme with many previous finalists going on to secure work placements and permanent positions as a result of competing.

Charlotte is one out of only 14 students chosen to move onto the final which will take place in London in September.
