Winners of the Contribution to Community award

Doctoral Researchers celebrated at PhD awards 2019

The PhD awards, held on 5 July 2019, recognised the hard work of Doctoral Researchers at Loughborough University.

Organised by Leah Henrickson (Doctoral Researcher President), Hugh Tawell (Doctoral Researcher Vice President) and LSU Postgraduate Executive Officer Kamaldeen Ibrahim, the event was co-funded by the Doctoral College and Alumni Association

Over 70 people attended the evening and the Doctoral Researcher community were heavily involved in the running of it.

Nathaniel Kaill from the Design School created the awards using 3D printing. Johnny Cartucho and Tony Tian captured the festivities as the event photographers and Michael Harry provided the entertainment with his beautiful singing. All are Doctoral Researchers.

There were ten awards (plus three highly commended mentions), presented by staff and alumni. Doctoral alumna and Bom Bom Patisserie owner, Marta Oliveria Child even designed custom Bom Bom gift certificates for the winning teams. 

The winners for each award were:

  • Contribution to Knowledge: Diana Mehta
  • PhD Teaching Excellence: Naval Singh
  • Contribution to Community (sponsored by the Alumni Association): The Writing Gym
  • PGR Rep of the Year (Highly Commended): Oliver Haslam
  • PGR Rep of the Year: IJ Ikpeh
  • Sub-Warden of the Year (Highly Commended): George Alliott
  • Sub-Warden of the Year: Laura Crawford
  • Contribution to Student Development: Jane Purvey
  • Supervisory Team of the Year (Highly Commended): Nina Attridge and Camilla Gilmore
  • Supervisory Team of the Year: Lettie Bishop and Christof Leicht
  • Team of the Year: ABCE Hub Committee
  • Unsung Hero: Berkeley Young
  • Overall Impact: Jack Joyce

Leah Henrickson, Doctoral Researcher President said on behalf of the team: “We were delighted to be joined by students, staff, and alumni as we celebrated the achievements of Loughborough's Doctoral community at the PhD Awards.

“The ceremony recognised particular individual and team successes from the academic year, but the community has thrived this year. We look forward to seeing it continue to flourish for years to come.”
