Doctoral College’s Summer Showcase celebrates research of Loughborough PhD students

On 12 June, the Doctoral College’s annual Summer Showcase event took place.

The Showcase is an opportunity for Loughborough University and Loughborough University London Doctoral Researchers to share their research and network with others from a wide range of Schools, Departments and Professional Services.

At the start of the day, Professor Elizabeth Peel, Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor (Doctoral College), took to the stage and reflected on some of the many successes of the last year, which included:

  • 202 PhDs and EngDs completed so far this academic year
  • Over 91 countries represented by the University’s doctoral population
  • A University record for PRES responses (55%)
  • 188 researcher development workshops and 33 research development workshops delivered
  • Over 150 attendees at the Annual Research Conference
  • An Institutional Doctoral Wellbeing Action Plan being approved
  • An orientation for researchers new to the UK created
  • The first BAME Research at Loughborough event

As part of the conference, a poster competition was held which had over 60 submissions and were judged by 25 members of Academic and Professional Services staff. The overall winner was Dan Wright from the School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering, with ‘Zonal controls: A home heating revolution?”.

Also commended were Nicolette Formosa (A.I Taking Over The Wheel), Ciara Sugrue (Are Plants Fortune Tellers?)and Helena Grantham (Go with the flow Chemistry).

New to the Summer Showcase this year was the Showcase Exhibition; an exciting opportunity for Doctoral Researchers to showcase the practical and creative implications of their academic endeavours. Five Doctoral Researchers took part in the Showcase Exhibition with Victor Jeganathan winning the delegate's choice award (£50).

In addition, the Three Minute Thesis challenge required entrants to explain their doctoral research in just three minutes with only one static slide.

The overall winner was Jennifer Glover from the School of Aeronautical, Automotive, Chemical and Materials Engineering with Turning jet engine noise down to 2020. As a result of winning, she received an iPad mini and will also compete in the national competition.

Anna West from the Design School was the runner-up and Johnny Valadas-Cartucho from Wolfson received the People’s Choice award.
