An academic at Loughborough University has been named PhD Supervisor of the Year at the 2019 Postgrad Awards.

Dr David Fletcher, Senior Lecturer in Sport and Performance Psychology, was announced as the winner of the category earlier this week, which received more than 140 nominations from across the country.

Both current and former PhD students praised David for his outstanding support over the years. He has encouraged them to present at international conferences, mentored them into getting their desired job, nominated them for awards, and held sessions to help students build on their writing skills.

The students also remarked on how David is not only supportive academically, but also pastorally.

Dr Fletcher has worked at the University for 12 years and is based within the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences. He specialises in the psychology of performance excellence in sport, business and other performance domains. His work addresses how high achievers thrive on pressure and deliver sustained success.

He is also the Director of Postgraduate Taught Studies and Director of the Research Degree Programmes for Sport Performance.

The judges – consisting of experts from across the education sector - commented that David has an ‘innovative approach to supporting students and a real commitment to creating employment opportunities’.

Commenting on the award, Dr Fletcher said: “It’s humbling to win this award, particularly because it’s on behalf of PhD students and peers.

“Supervising PhD students is one of the best parts of my job and I’m fortunate that Loughborough University has created a research environment that enables students and supervisors alike to thrive.”
