Removal of Google services – upcoming workshops

Google services for staff (except Google Scholar) will be removed from operation in June 2019.

The University has decided to change to Microsoft Services for a number of reasons, such as Google reducing its investment in its products and a lack of support availability.

Because of the change of services, all data stored in the Google suite (such as Docs, Drive, Forms, Photos etc.) will be removed.

All staff will need to take action to retain any data they have on Google services.

The IT Services team will be running workshops across campus in February, March and April, providing a walkthrough of the Google Takeout process to allow staff members who have data stored in Google to make back-up copies prior to the services being removed.

The workshops will also offer guidance on how to store these copies in OneDrive, as well as answer any other queries staff might have about the change.

The dates and times of the workshops are as follows:

  • 26 February – 9:30am-11:30am, S006 (Z1-3), Department of Materials
  • 28 March – 9:30am-11:30am, N004, Haslegrave Building
  • 25 April – 9:30am-11:30am, YY009, John Cooper Building

A step-by-step guide which provides advice on preparing your files and backing up any Google data you have – as well as FAQs – is also available on the IT Services webpages.
