LU Arts will host a week of student workshops run by internationally recognised artists

Five artists from different subject areas and with different methods of working will run Co-Lab – a week of practical and fun workshops running from 20-24 January.

These sessions will give students the chance to gain new skills, expand their knowledge, increase their employability, support their degree and meet new people.

The following sessions are on offer:

Monday 20 January: Will Shannon (wood and art)

Will is an artist who works with wood to create imaginative works. He is currently working on a new piece of art for the University campus in the form of a public work bench, which will be installed in the student village.  This session will explore ideas for this project, as well as providing opportunities to learn about woodworking and furniture making techniques.

Tuesday 21 January: Matthew Raw (ceramics and art)

This practical session, run by ceramicist Matthew Raw, will involve rolling clay and exploring different techniques, textures and clay bodies to create tiles.

Wednesday 22 January: Florence Peake (dance and art)

Florence is an artist whose practice involves movement and dance. In this workshop you will create large-scale drawings and paintings inspired by movement, using the whole body to capture gestures and actions through mark-making. No prior dance or art experience is required.

Thursday 23 January: Sophie Huckfield (craft, design and engineering)

Learn new ways of working with trans-disciplinary artist and engineer Sophie Huckfield. Using story building, role play, co-design and physical making, you will compose a production inspired by the fictions employed by science and technology industries. How can we challenge the view that technology is the solution to social and political issues?

Friday 24 January: Dash N’ Dem (social design and art)

Design action group Dash N’ Dem produce wide-ranging participatory projects concerning political education and engagement. Working across a variety of media and platforms, their projects encourage audiences to think critically and creatively and work collaboratively. Join them in this workshop to create a collaborative production.

All workshops take place from 11am to 4pm in The Gallery, located in the Fine Art Building. Places are strictly limited and are on a first-come, first-served basis so advance booking is essential. All of the workshops can be booked online via the LU Arts website. A £3 deposit is required for each workshop which will be refunded on completion of the session. Please note deposits will not be refunded if you fail to attend.

Co-lab is an annual programme of artist-led workshops, which encourages students to work across different subject areas and use different methodologies. More information on Co-Lab can be found here.
