Loughborough Reader becomes fourth UK recipient to be named a NASSS Research Fellow

A Loughborough academic has recently become the UK’s fourth recipient to be a named a Research Fellow of the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport (NASSS).

Dr Dominic Malcolm, a Reader in the Sociology of Sport based within the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences, was given the award at the NASSS Annual Conference which was held at Virginia Beach last month.

The Society recognised Dr Malcolm’s contribution to the academic community, as well as his large body of work across the years covering various aspects of the sociology of sport.

In particular, the group were significantly impressed with articles Dominic had contributed to the organisation’s journal, covering topics about athlete injuries, medical management and concussion in sport.

Dr Malcolm was awarded the fellowship by NASSS President Akilah Carter-Francique alongside Faye Wachs, who was also named a 2019 recipient of the fellowship.

Talking about the award, Dr Malcolm said: “As with many subjects, North America is a powerhouse in sociology of sport, so it’s great to have this kind of international recognition.”
