Loughborough Family comes together for Clearing

Yesterday (15 August) was A-level Results Day, and a significant number of Loughborough staff and students became call handlers for the day to assist with the Clearing process.

Over 9,000 calls were taken on the day, with the team picking up the phone to prospective students from countries such as Nigeria, India and France as well as within the UK.

Over 10% of calls received were in relation to Adjustment – an option for students who did considerably better than expected and are given the opportunity to think about their options.

BBC East Midlands Today also came onto campus to broadcast live from the call centre and spoke to the Vice Chancellor about those who received their results and the University’s stance on unconditional offers.

Speaking on their lunchtime news, Professor Robert Allison said: “We do not do unconditional offers here. I don’t believe it’s right, everyone who has got into Loughborough today has got here because they have worked hard.

“I think a university has to be about academic standards. If you give one set of offers to one group of people and one set of offers to another, I do not think the principle is fair.”

Pro Vice-Chancellor of Teaching Professor Rachel Thomson also spoke to the BBC for their evening news programme: “It’s been a massive team effort. We have taken great care to offer advice and get answers to students for the questions they are asking.

“Congratulations to all of those who have achieved their results today, particularly those who are joining the Loughborough Family.”
