Improving IT Security at the University
Reports of hacking attacks against key information systems across the Higher Education sector have increased in recent years and raise great concern to all users of our services. To protect against threats such as this, we are increasing the University’s IT Security services.
To secure staff University accounts further, IT Services are rolling out Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).
What is MFA and how does it affect me?
MFA is an additional layer of IT security which requires you to verify your identity when logging in to certain systems and services. You may have already encountered multi-factor authentication when doing online banking. The first phase of this will be for off-campus access and will protect staff who access a number of key services such as email and Workspaces.
Timescale and action required?
The launch date for this service is December 2019 and it will require all staff to complete the self-enrolment process – a few simple steps to enable staff to work securely off campus to protect data and devices. As part of the launch, IT Services will be hosting a series of events across campus in November to support staff.
Are you looking for an opportunity to fulfil a PDR objective?
To support the roll-out, IT Services are calling on volunteers across Schools, Departments and Professional Services to act in the capacity of a ‘Change Agent’ – a service champion to help plan local activities, signpost colleagues to support webpages, instructional videos or Service Desk referral to assist with enrolments.
