Four Loughborough students in the finals of the Undergraduate of the Year Awards
This year, Stephen Lim-Heath, Kate Hardwick, Lauren Postlethwaite and Olivia Tomlinson from Loughborough University have reached the final stage of the Undergraduate of the Year Awards.
Undergraduates from across the UK can enter the competition, with 14 categories each sponsored by a graduate recruiter. Winning one of the categories is a fantastic addition to a student’s CV.
The application process gives students experience in psychometric tests, phone interviews and assessment centres – all elements of graduate job applications. The prizes include internships, gadgets and opportunities to shadow senior managers in top organisations.
Stephen and Kate are both shortlisted for the Management Undergraduate category, sponsored by Enterprise. If successful, they will win a summer placement at the company.

First year International Business student, Stephen, said: “At the start of the application I was hesitant, yet with every stage of the process I’ve impressed myself.
“Being a student at Loughborough has taught me to develop my professional self.”
Kate, a second year Air Transport Management student added: “Just getting to this point has offered me a lot of networking opportunities with many senior members from all ten companies involved.”
Stephen and Kate both attended the assessment centre held at Enterprise’s European Headquarters, giving students a taste of what they could win.
Loughborough University also has students in the One to Watch Undergraduate category, sponsored by IQ-EQ, and the Female Undergraduate category, sponsored by Rolls-Royce.
Second year Graphic Communication and Illustration student, Lauren, really pushed herself out of her comfort zone by applying for the One to Watch category.
She commented: “The process has taught me that my instincts are crucial in supporting my decisions.
“Loughborough has definitely taught me to think for myself and have confidence in taking a harder, or different, route”.
Lauren and Olivia could win a summer internship and trip abroad if they are announced as the winners of their categories.
Olivia, a third year Aeronautical engineering student said: “To win this competition would mean a lot to me, as it would mean that my hard work on my course and extracurricular activities have been recognised, particularly those activities focused on promoting women into STEM.”
Organised by TARGETjobs, the final of the competition will be held on 26 April in Canary Wharf. The ceremony will be hosted by Countdown’s Rachel Riley.
