Professor Wood with Lord Mayor of Leicester

3 Oct 2018

Professor inaugurated as President of Leicester Literature and Philosophical Society

Professor Nigel Wood, from the School of the Arts, English and Drama, has been inaugurated as the President of the Leicester Literary and Philosophical (Lit and Phil) Society.

Professor Wood’s President’s Address, delivered at the Society’s first meeting of the year, was 'Digital Humanities: Old Wine in New Bottles?' in which he looked at W.B. Yeats’s poetry and a number of Renaissance plays, and discussed how helpful word searching might turn out to be.

The Lit and Phil Society organises an annual series of lectures and discussions, usually held at Leicester New Walk Museum, with the aim of advancing education in literature, science and art. The society publishes reports, papers and proceedings as well as supporting the museum.

The Society’s next meeting will take place on 15 October 2018, when Professor Sir Michael Marmot will deliver ‘The Social Determinants of Health and Health Equity’.
