Students inspired at NCOP Pathways’ Year 10 Holiday Club
At the end of last month, Loughborough University welcomed more than 100 Year 10 students onto campus to give them an insight into STEM, sport and global contexts.
The second annual Year 10 Holiday Club was hosted by the University and the School and College Liaison Team in collaboration with the Pathways National Collaborative Outreach Project (NCOP) consortium [Leicester University and De Montfort University].
The event, which ran from 29 May-1 June, saw Year 10 students – considered to fit the key Widening Participation criteria as part of the University’s Access Agreement – take part in one of three programmes: ‘Spotlight on STEM’, ‘Steps into Sport’ and ‘Global Contexts’.
The Spotlight on STEM strand featured a variety of sessions on the theme of traffic and transport and captured a number of different subject areas from Architecture and Engineering.
Steps into Sport encouraged pupils to explore a wide-range of sports-related activities from different perspectives, such as sports nutrition and creating a sports memoir, while Global Contexts examined WWI and its impact through a number of relevant subject areas including Art, Social Sciences and Humanities.
The students in attendance were left feeling inspired by the offering of universities and, in particular, Loughborough University.
One youngster commented: “My eyes were really opened up to the kinds of subjects that I might want to do at university and it was really helpful to be able to talk to the student ambassadors about their own experiences.”
