Design Degree Show 2018 to showcase diverse and innovative projects
Students from the Loughborough Design School will present their final-year projects at the Design Degree Show 2018, which opens to the public on Thursday 14 June.
The Degree Show is an annual exhibition showcasing finalists’ work that runs for five days in June of each year.
It is a fantastic opportunity for potential employers, friends, family, industry and members of the public to see the projects produced by students and speak to them about their products and experience.
Aiming to solve a wide range of problems, the innovative designs on display include Luke Hannon’s IVO – an IV stand designed specifically for children aged three to six (see main image).
The design aims to reduce the anxiety many children have about this kind of treatment by hiding all the medical equipment inside a fun, friendly, ride-on product.
Also on show will be ‘Lume’ by Zoe Bryant, a traffic detection device for horse riders. It uses radar technology to detect approaching vehicles and cyclists from up to 60m away then alerts the rider and the road user of one another’s presence, reducing the likelihood of an accident.

Joff Bullock will present San – a design that turns plastic waste into sanitation pipes – and Emily Knott will display Roma, a savoury smell diffuser that reminds people with dementia to eat.

A digital camera for people with a visual impairment, called Note, will also be showcased at the event. It was developed by Rob Chapman and features dual display, an adaptable view finder and tactile controls.

Dean of Loughborough Design School, Professor Richard Bibb, commented: “Everyone in Loughborough Design School is looking forward to welcoming visitors to our 2018 Degree Show. Once again our students have produced an exciting and diverse range of novel and innovative projects addressing a wide variety of users and needs.
“I am sure that everyone who visits will be impressed by the quality of the work on show and the dedication and enthusiasm of our students. Our students can look forward to proudly exhibiting their work to friends, family and of course our many visitors from industry.”
The show is produced and publicised by a team of final year student volunteers, working with members of staff, to organise an event which they feel reflects their experience and how they want to promote their products.
It will be accompanied by a book which highlights each student’s work through photographs, CAD (computer-aided design) renders and text.
The degree show is open to the public from 14 –18 June at the Loughborough Design School. Opening times vary and can be found on the dedicated event page.

Following the Degree Show, emerging Loughborough designers will exhibit at New Designers in London – an annual exhibition of new and innovative design thinking.
The University is also hosting its 2018 Arts Degree Show from 9-17 June from 10am-5pm at the Edward Barnsley Building, Loughborough University. More information can be found on the dedicated website.
