An event showcasing Black, Asian and Minority Ethnicity (BAME) research at Loughborough University is to take place next month.

The University’s Doctoral College will host ‘BAME Research at Loughborough’ on 16 January in Room SMB017 (Stuart Mason Building).

From 1:30pm-4:30pm, the free event will give attendees the chance to ask questions and network with others. It will also highlight the work being carried out by a range of researchers and academics and will feature a series of presentations.

Those speaking at the event include Dr James Esson, Dr Line Nyhagen, Dr Catherine Armstrong, Dr Inês Varela-Silva, Dr Angela Dy, Dr Rohit Dasgupta, Dr Steve Bradbury, Cuomu Zhaxi and Dom Conricode.

The talks will explore topics such as the role of race and ethnicity in the classroom; the effects of race and racism on health; the importance of intersectionality; and the under-representation and racialised experiences of BAME coaches in sport.

The full programme, including speakers and the title of their presentations, can be found on the Doctoral College webpages.

Event organiser Dr Katryna Kalawsky, from the Doctoral College, said: “BAME Research at Loughborough is a new multidisciplinary event to shine a spotlight on some of the inspiring and thought-provoking work conducted by a wide range of researchers and academics at the University.

“It is hoped that this event will provide attendees with greater insight into BAME matters to prompt discussion, challenge any negative narratives, and to ultimately promote equality, diversity and inclusion.”

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Adviser, Abida Akram added: “This is an important event to raise awareness of BAME matters including race and intersectionality. It is also an opportunity for staff and students from across the University to come together and support BAME issues and concerns that can arise in society.”

Chief Operating Officer and Loughborough University’s Race Equality Champion, Richard Taylor, commented: “This event will bring together important research perspectives from across the University”.

All staff and students are welcome to attend. To book your place, visit the online store.
