Loughborough Professor takes part in international low-carbon vehicles event

Loughborough’s Professor Graham Hargrave, and Research Associate Jonathan Wilson took part in a low carbon vehicles event at the British Embassy in Paris last week.

Graham, an internationally acclaimed expert on the optimisation of combustion engines, was part of a panel discussing pioneering research in universities, speaking about how ultra-low emissions diesel engines are crucial in reducing transport emissions.

The recognition comes after Graham and Jonathan designed new technology that has the potential to significantly cut nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions in diesel engines.

Most cars use Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) that limits NOx produced by combustion, but this only functions well at high exhaust temperatures, typically 250oC.

Graham and Jonathan, alongside academics from the University’s School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering, created the Ammonia Creation and Conversion Technology (ACCT).

ACCT enables SCR systems to work at much lower temperatures, even at 60oC. This means that the NOx reduction system remains active throughout start-stop journeys .

The two were also invited to the Institution of Engineering and Technology Awards 2017 for their innovative work. The awards were hosted in London last week.
