An innovative car charger designed as part of research undertaken at the Loughborough Design School has been awarded a world-renowned iF Design Award.

Infinity Energy is a car charger which can be adjusted to fit a range of different devices. It uses a high-performance, industrial-grade identification chip which allows users to charge laptops and smartphones simultaneously.

Dr Ke Lou developed the award-winning product in partnership with USbright Technology Co. Ltd in Shenzhen, China as part of his PhD, which he completed in 2016.

The iF Design Award is an internationally recognised sign of design excellence, founded in 1953. It is judged by a panel of over 60 renowned experts in design, industry and architecture.

The award ceremony took place earlier this month in Munich, with over 2,000 guests from 41 countries celebrating winners across a wide range of design disciplines.

Dr Darren Southee, Senior Lecturer in Design and Programme Director MA Industrial Design and Technology, said: “It is incredibly exciting to see the ground-breaking product design research taking place at Loughborough recognised internationally with this prestigious award. We would like to congratulate Ke Lou and his collaborators at USbright for this wonderful achievement.”

All winning entries to the iF Design Award will be permanently featured in the ‘Design Excellence’ section of the iF World Design Guide - the world’s largest design portal - as well as the iF Design Exhibition Hamburg from spring 2017.
