Leading Loughborough academics appear on House of Commons Select Committees
Two leading Loughborough University academics made parliamentary appearances today on Select Committees for Education, Science and Technology.
Shahin Rahimifard, Professor of Sustainable Engineering at Loughborough’s School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering and Director of SMART (Sustainable Manufacturing and Recycling Technologies), presented evidence to the Science and Technology Committee’s ‘My Science Inquiry’, asking ‘Is Net-Positive Manufacturing a realistic goal?’
His full written submission, which explores how to minimise the negative impacts of manufacturing, and how it can be restructured to be more sustainable, can be read here.
The inquiry was established as an open opportunity for the general public and science communities to put forward ideas for science and technology inquiries to the Committee. As well as receiving written proposals, ideas were sourced via one minute Twitter videos submitted using the hashtag #MyScienceInquiry.

Harriet Ward CBE, Emeritus Professor of Child and Family Research with Loughborough’s School of Social, Political and Geographical Sciences appeared on the Education Committee inquiry into fostering. This covers issues surrounding commissioning of services and placement matching for looked after children, the involvement of young people in their foster care and the role of private companies in foster care provision.
Today the Committee held its first public evidence session as part of the inquiry, hearing from foster carers and key industry representatives on current issues facing the foster care system, including working conditions and protection for foster carers, the relationships between local authorities and independent providers, and Government initiatives to improve foster care in England.
