Student reaches finals in international competition

Loughborough student, Robert Green, has been selected as an Award Finalist in the National Instruments (NI) Student Design Competition.

The competition seeks to find Northern Europe’s best undergraduate project, inviting engineering students to show how they have used NI technology to empower their innovations.

Robert’s project, Turning Breath into words, is a prototype system that can learn the breathing patterns of an impaired person and produce spoken words on their behalf.

Ethical approval for the project has been granted by The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust for initial tests on selected patients in an Intensive Treatment Unit.

Turning Breath into words was among entries from 30 prestigious Universities across six different countries, and was one of only six projects to have been shortlisted for the award.

Voting for the competition opens 20S eptember and closes 21 October. The overall winner will be announced at the Engineering Impact Awards ceremony held at the RSA in London.
