Daniel Wilkinson Statement

Loughborough University and the University's Football Club would like to pass on its condolences to the friends and family of Daniel Wilkinson, who tragically passed away yesterday evening whilst playing the game he loved.

Danny, as his friends and family knew him, was appearing for his new club, Shaw Lane, who he joined after graduating this summer with a degree in Accounting and Financial Management.

After collapsing on the pitch at St Giles Road Stadium on Monday night, he was taken to Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax where he sadly passed away.

Just 24 years old, Wilkinson played both BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) and Midland Football Alliance football for Loughborough University during his four years of study, making a positive contribution both on and off the pitch during that time.

Of the tragic news, Loughborough University Football Club Head Coach Michael Skubala said: "Our thoughts are with Danny’s family and friends at this difficult time. After graduating from Loughborough University this summer, Danny had just embarked upon the next chapter in his life, and will be sadly missed by current and former members of Loughborough University and the football family.

"Danny was both an accomplished student and footballer, who had a great life ahead of him. A young man with great character and liked by all, Danny had a positive influence on everyone he met in his time at Loughborough and will be sorely missed by those who knew him best."

Danny started his career at Hull City, before loan moves to Harrogate Town and North Ferriby United. Whilst studying at Loughborough, he played for the University side, before joining Shaw Lane from Rushall Olympic in the summer.

A book of remembrance will be opened in the coming days. If you have been affected by this news, support is available through the Centre for Faith and Spirituality (www. http://www.lboro.ac.uk/services/cfs/) and the Counselling Service (www.lboro.ac.uk/counselling
