University Fruit Routes project returns!

Loughborough University’s Fruit Routes project is back for another year with a range of exciting harvesting activities to get involved in.

Staff, students and the local community are invited to the harvest celebrations taking place over the next two weeks.

Apple harvesting is kick-starting the events on 5th October at 207-211 Ashby Road Orchard. Following this on 6th and 12th October are two lunchtime harvesting sessions which invite people to pick abundant fruit from trees on campus.

For the first time this year, a baking workshop will also be a part of the Fruit Routes programme. The workshop is being run in collaboration with local café Bom Bom Patisserie on 13th October. Master chef Marta Child will give a demonstration on how to use local fruits to make lovely desserts from 6 – 7.30pm.

On 14th October is the official apple pressing event where you can press apples from campus into delicious apple juice or transform at home into cider. The event is taking place at The Shed behind the Edward Herbert Building, in association with Transition Loughborough, a community driven movement aimed at reducing the dependence on fossil fuels and promoting local infrastructure in Loughborough.

The final harvesting event and the judging of the Campus Apple Bake Off will run on 15th October with help from the Landscaping and Gardening Society (LAGS) and Transition Loughborough. The day consists of an artist led walk around the Fruit Route, free home-made soup and the 2016 Apple Olympics before the Bake Off judging and eats take place to end the day. Entrants are welcome to use fruit they have collected from pick up points on campus.

The Fruit Routes harvest project is organised by Sustainability Manager at Loughborough University Jo Shields and project founder, artist Anne-Marie Culhane.

Jo Shields said: “We are looking forward to hosting another year of Fruit Routes on campus. This year we have some exciting new additions to the programme including the collaboration with Bom Bom Patisserie. We hope to see a lot of staff members, students and members of the public getting involved in the Campus Apple Bake off this year too. We have lots on offer, everyone is welcome and all activities are free!”
