Staff and students invited to Market Day in town centre tomorrow

Staff and students are invited to attend Market Day in Loughborough Town Centre tomorrow.

Over the last few months, LU Arts has been working on a series of exciting and innovative projects as part of their Market Town programme, designed to inspire the local community and rejuvenate the high street.

The Market Town projects include:

Brand News which will see a local newsagent, Ashby Square News, have all of its stock repackaged and rebranded. Artist Kathrin Bohm and designers, An Endless Supply have held a series of hands-on workshops where local people have had a go at designing their own ‘Loughborough branded’ items. The whole product range of the shop will be rebranded tomorrow to investigate whether redesigning familiar branded products affects their popularity.

Loughborough Records Presents Presence, a pop up recording studio designed by artist Can Altay. Altay’s project has been created to give local musicians the chance to record music, complete with the assistance of a professional sound engineer and instruments. It is about discovering a sense of place through music. A range of artists from a 14 year old first time singer to a 60 year old folk artist have been using the studio throughout January.

Europa and illustrator Peter Nencini who have sought to create a visual identity for Loughborough through the use of billboards. Europa and Peter have visited various areas within the town the local archive library to get a feel for Loughborough.

Tomorrow, the University will run ‘Market Day’ to celebrate the culmination of the three arts projects. On Market Day the studio will be open to visitors and the final recordings created by the musicians will be played. The public will also be able to see the re-branded items in Ashby Square News. The event will take place in Market Town Corner, Carillon Court.

Tea, coffee, juice and pastries will be served from 11.00am and Radar's Nick Slater and Kate Self will provide an introduction to the projects at 11.30am and give a short tour around Can Altay’s installation and Kathrin Böhm’s Brand News. Europa and Peter Nencini will also run a special drop-in workshop at 1:30pm.
