Nine teams qualify for BUCS Big Wednesday to be held at Loughborough University

Nine Loughborough teams have qualified for BUCS Big Wednesday, being held on campus on 24/25 March.

Big Wednesday is the culmination of the BUCS team sport programme and this year will be held at Loughborough University with over 40 fixtures taking place over two days of action.

Women’s hockey had the honour of being the first team to qualify after defeating University of Exeter 5-3 on penalty flicks.

They were later joined by men’s hockey who won an incredible 13-12 on flicks after a 4-4 draw away against Birmingham.

Both will play for Championship titles against Birmingham (women) and Nottingham (men).

Badminton continued their dominance in BUCS competition with four teams winning their semi-final matches.

The men and women’s first teams will play Bath (men) and Leeds (women) the Championship finals on the Wednesday, with the second teams in action on the Tuesday in the Trophy finals.

Women’s lacrosse defeated Cambridge 9-8 and will play Durham in the Championship final. It will be a memorable week for the team who will also play MIT in the trans-Atlantic varsity fixture on Sunday 22 March in the University Stadium.

Men’s table tennis qualified for the Trophy final, being played on the Tuesday, where they will face UCL after defeating Northumbria.

Over the weekend women’s basketball defeated Oxford and Cardiff Met in the BUCS 8’s to qualify for their second Championship final in three years where they will play either Durham or Northumbria.

Finally the men’s rugby union team have qualified for their BUCS Championship finals, after a fine away victory 16-29 against Exeter.

Although not part of BUCS Big Wednesday, the team will play against Leeds Beckett on Friday 27 March at the home of English rugby – Twickenham.
