Fruit Routes map launched

Jonathon Porritt

Environmentalist Jonathon Porritt has urged more universities to follow Loughborough’s lead with the Eat Your Campus project.

He was speaking at the launch yesterday of a map of the Fruit Routes – the first such initiative developed by a university.

Fruit Routes, which includes fruit trees in various parts of the campus, is the culmination of three years' work by artist/sustainability campaigner Anne-Marie Culhane, the Sustainability, Grounds and Gardens teams within FM, and the Students Union’s Landscaping and Gardening Society (LAGS).

The overarching Eat Your Campus project, which involves the University, the Students’ Union and the local community, aims to create an ‘edible landscape’ from the campus’s green spaces, where food is grown for staff, students and the local community.

It won the Higher Education Sustainability Project prize at this year’s Guardian University Awards.
