Loughborough engineering student picks up top award

Ioannis Georgiou has been recognized as the most outstanding student in his year at Loughborough University with the award of the Sir William Siemens Medal.

A panel of senior engineering managers from Siemens deemed his submission to be the best from Loughborough due to not only his all-round academic ability but also his enthusiasm for engineering and a demonstrable knowledge of engineering challenges and possible solutions.

Ioannis, who is in the second year of his Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree, was one of nine young engineers from some of the UKs leading universities to be recognized by Siemens as being the most outstanding students in their year.

They received the Sir William Siemens Medal, specially designed and struck by The Royal Mint, and a paid internship with Siemens.

Dr Chinthana Panagamuwa, Lecturer in Photonic Systems in the School of Electronic, Electrical and Systems Engineering, said: “We are absolutely delighted to see Ioannis win this prestigious award.

“He is an outstanding model student, not just academically but also in terms of his character, extra-curricular activities and work ethic. This award is richly deserved.”
