Key questions

What is Dynamic Working?

Dynamic Working is a pattern of working that enables staff to deliver their priorities in a flexible way whilst maintaining the culture and operational effectiveness of the University. It’s about delivering the duties and responsibilities of your job role but with more flexibility on where and how this is best achieved.

How much of my time can I work remotely?

Although there will be exceptions most staff who can work dynamically will spend more time working from campus than working from home. To determine your specific arrangements, your manager will determine the proportion of your role that needs to be performed from campus, considering both the operational needs of the role and the need to maintain effective interactions between team members and development of a positive team culture. Once they have determined the appropriate proportion, they will discuss with you your wishes about Dynamic Working to work out the optimal arrangements.

What is the difference between Dynamic Working and Flexible Working?

Flexible working is a fixed change to your working patterns for which there is a formal application procedure. By comparison Dynamic Working is an informal arrangement between you and your manager which is intended to give more flexibility in when and where you deliver your role. If you want to agree a fixed pattern of work that doesn’t vary from week to week you will need to make a flexible working request.

Does Dynamic Working affect my employment terms and conditions?

No. Dynamic working is non-contractual and is an informal arrangement that can be varied at any time. Your designated place of work remains unchanged as a result of these informal arrangements.

When does Dynamic Working officially start?

It is intended that where appropriate, Dynamic Working arrangements will have implemented by the 1st of November 2021 though some may start as early as the 1st of October 2021.

Will I be able to keep my desk/office?

During phase 1 (until January 2022), your usual workspace/desk/office will be available to you. However, following this point colleagues who deliver a significant proportion of their role dynamically may (if applicable) no longer have access to their own office or dedicated workstation. This will allow the University to realise the space efficiency savings needed to significantly reduce our cost base and to achieve our carbon reduction obligations.
