Rui completed his BSc in Psychology and MSc in Clinical and Health Psychology in Portugal, between 2013 and 2017. Following this, Rui has worked as a Research Fellow at the William James Center for Research, one of Portugal’s top Psychology R&D units, in Lisbon. Rui’s work in Experimental Psychology concerned the emotional contagion via body odour. Rui is currently undertaking a fully funded PhD at the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University.
Project title: Sleep, arousal and performance: The management of cognitive and physiological arousal in sport.
The PhD concerns the athlete's predisposition for higher arousal and consequent insomnia episodes, as well as its impact on performance. Rui is being supervised by Doctor Iuliana Hartescu (Principal Supervisor), Doctor Robin Jackson (Secondary Supervisor) and collaborating with Professor Kevin Morgan.
