Loughborough University ranks 1st in Europe for Sport Science in new list of worldwide Sport Science schools and departments
Loughborough University's School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences has been ranked 2nd in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (AWRU) global ranking of sport science schools and departments - from a final list of 361 institutions worldwide.
The rankings were published by ShanghaiRanking on 8 December 2016 and recognise both academic excellence and industry-leading research.
Since the publication of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by academic subjects in 2009, ShanghaiRanking has been constantly seeking ways to expand the subjects covered. This is the first attempt to rank a group of institutions and units with the same subject focus, prompted by the crucial role of Sport Science schools and departments in equipping students with skills to meet the needs of the fast-growing global sports industry.
Universities were assessed as eligible for inclusion in the rankings based on two criteria: firstly, that they are a sport university or have sport-related units, secondly that the institution has actively engaged in research in the past five years. The universities were then ranked by several indicators of academic or research performance, including total citations, papers published in the top 25% journals, and the percentage of internationally collaborated papers of the institution.
For Loughborough University, the School's ranking 2nd out of the top 300 global universities and 1st in Europe (out of 144 European institutions) is a major achievement.
This latest accolade caps a year of significant achievements, with the School also highly rated for Sport Science in the latest national newspaper league tables. It further confirms Loughborough as an internationally recognised centre of excellence for the study of sport, exercise and health through the natural and social sciences.
"This ranking in the AWRU list confirms Loughborough as one of the leading Sport Science schools in the world," said Professor Mark Lewis, Dean of the School. "This is clearly a testament to the outstanding educational experience we offer our students. But the emphasis the rankings place on volume and quality of research really highlights the excellence and breadth of what we do here."
