New book on business analytics by Professor Tom Jackson

Professor Tom Jackson and co-author Steven Lockwood have just had their new book, Business Analytics: A Contemporary Approach, published by Palgrave. The book explores the importance of data in providing the analytics for everyday situations and how it’s used effectively to drive outcome, improve performance and inform and influence decision making.

In this age of ‘data trumps everything’, information is regarded as the lifeline of a company as it flows across organisations when they do business internally and externally. This book brings readers up to speed with necessary background information on analytics and decision making across a range of professional fields.

Whether it’s the public or private sector, charities or non-profit organisations, industries need data to support business decisions to create new business models, theories and hypotheses that evolves the current ways of thinking.

Small businesses can also benefit from the wide range of business data as they tap into technology with their ‘as-you-go’ model with little capital outlay, which means a vast number of business ideas with reduced financial risk and increased capacity to compete with bigger firms.

The book comes with a reference architecture that provides a logical view of a solution and details the requirements to operate such a solution, including issues relating to metadata, governance, security, lifecycle management and privacy.

Professor Tom Jackson is the Associate Dean for Research in the School of Business and Economics and a member of the School’s Centre for Information Management. He has published for many years on the role of social media and email in society and the workplace and has focused recently on developing tools to collect, interpret and use social data to help emergency services manage crises effectively and efficiently.
