Masters students Tyler Bernardini (Marketing and Management MSc) and Anthony Rowe (Management MSc) were in the Leicester Riders basketball team win this past weekend.

The match, played in Glasgow, was against the Newcastle Eagles. It was the Riders’ fifth time competing in the British Basketball League Trophy Final and they triumphed 85-77 over the Eagles, making the Riders the BBL Trophy champions for the first time!

Tyler and Anthony both joined Loughborough University in 2014 as postgraduate students, Tyler coming from San Diego in the US to play for the Riders (Anthony was already on the team).

Anthony said:

It’s great to get this one in the bag, especially after having come so close to securing the BBL cup back in January.  There has only been 2 pieces of silverware on offer so far this season and we possess one of them and that feels great. Since the victory I haven't seen any complacency at practice, winning the trophy is actually a motivator for us to win more.

Also victorious were the Riders Women’s team who claimed a victory against the Manchester Mystics on their home court, the Leicester Community Arena. MSc Marketing and Management student and centre, Tori Faieta, made her debut at the match. She joined fellow team members and SBE students Erin McGarrachan (Corporate Finance MSc) and Alex Smith (Business Psychology MSc) to win 73-56.

It was so amazing to finally be back on the court with my teammates. I've enjoyed watching the team and cheering from the sideline but it's so different being able to be involved. I've really missed being on the court.

"The recovery process has been a little frustrating because it was longer than what I was expecting however I'm surrounded by such great teammates and coaches that kept my mind in a positive state. It's hard to be out for any amount of time as an athlete but you really value your time on court when you get back.
