Toward a Public Service Management: Ian Hodgkinson publishes in the prestigious Journal of Service Management

Ian Hodgkinson

CSM Deputy Director Dr Ian Hodgkinson has had his article “Toward a Public Service Management: Past, Present, and Future Directions” (with Claire Hannibal, Byron Keating, Ros Chester Buxton, & Nicola Bateman) published in Journal of Service Management (2016 Impact Factor: 2.897).

In providing a fine-grained analysis of public service management, the article makes an important contribution to furthering research in service management, a body of literature that has tended to regard public services as homogenous or to neglect the context altogether.

This general review paper is augmented by invited commentaries from Professors Tony Bovaird, John Bryson, and Zoe Radnor. Integrating public management and service management literatures, the past and present of public service management are discussed. Future directions for the field are then outlined drawing on a service-dominant approach that has the potential to transform public services.

As Ian explains:

“This article presents a hugely exciting opportunity to now unite the service management and public management fields so a true interdisciplinary public service management community can develop. My co-authors and I are indebted to Emeritus Professor Tony Bovaird, McKnight Presidential Professor John Bryson, and Professor Zoe Radnor – their thoughts and insights were invaluable to developing this review article”
