Politics and International Studies

Undergraduate study

Charlotte Firman

Qualification(s): BA (Hons)
Course: Politics with Economics

Why did you choose this course?

I chose my degree at Loughborough based on the flexibility of the course. The course enables you to take modules from other subject areas and encourages you to take a year abroad in your third year.

What attracted you to the University

I was attracted to the University due to its academic reputation and for the unique student experience offered.

What do you enjoy most about your course?

I enjoy the ability to choose different modules from outside of my subjects areas to complement my Politics modules.

What do you think of the teaching quality?

I think that the teaching quality in lectures and seminars is high, demonstrated through the enthusiasm and extensive knowledge of the lecturers on their subjects.

Describe a typical day on your course.

A day in Loughborough on this course involves going to lectures and seminars, and visiting the library often to keep up with the relevant readings. You don’t have an overwhelming amount of contact hours a week, so you can fill the rest of the time with studying, sports and societies.

Have you done a professional placement?

I took a placement year, with the Confederation of British Industry in Brussels. This was a fantastic opportunity advertised to me through the department, which I hope will benefit me in my fourth year at Loughborough. It has helped me focus on future career goals when I graduate, having had some experience in a professional environment abroad.

What do you hope to do when you graduate?

I hope to be employed upon graduation, either in Brussels or further afield. I feel that my Loughborough degree will support this, having studied modules on the EU, US and the Asia-Pacific.

What would you say to someone considering studying your course?

If you are thinking about applying to this course I would urge you to do so as soon as possible having carefully considered your options and what the course entails.

What do you enjoy most about being a student here?

The thing I most enjoy about being a student at Loughborough is meeting all kinds of different people, from various backgrounds and with different interests. I think it will prepare me well for life after graduation!
