Loughborough success in national society awards

A number of Loughborough Students’ Union (LSU) societies have been successful in the 2017 National Society Awards. Held earlier this year in Nottingham, the annual awards celebrate the best student societies in the UK.

Picking up the Best New Society award was Loughborough Space Society. The group was founded in September 2016 and in that time has recruited over 70 members. Charles Newton, Founder and Chair, said: "It is an incredible honour for Loughborough Space Society to be named Best New Society in the UK. We strive to provide a wide range of fun events and experiences in the society and I look forward to welcoming all our new and returning members this year.” Charles, now a finalist on the MEng Mechanical Engineering programme, is pictured third from the left in the picture above.

The Loughborough LGBT+ Association won the Welfare and Inclusivity Award. Chris McLeod, the association’s Chair said: “Being at the awards with all the energy from our Loughborough groups made it an amazing evening, but to win the national award was quite unbelievable! We hope to carry on our good work in the coming year.”

Loughborough Marrow was named Most Improved Society and was Highly Commended for the Best Society Event for Spit Happens. The society works in association with Anthony Nolan to save the lives of those with blood cancer. Chair, Pippa Baynham commented: “We were extremely flattered to have received the most improved society award and to have been highly commended for best event. These awards really helped us to feel pride in what we have achieved.”

Sam Hill, Societies Executive Officer at LSU said: “I’m really thrilled that our groups did so well at the National Societies Awards this year, it’s a great testament to all the great work our societies do. I am looking forward to what we can achieve in the coming year and hopefully we can have far more societies nominating themselves for the National Societies Awards 2018 in Cardiff.”
