Maths students among undergraduates recognised for academic excellence

Dr Tyler Shendruk of the Mathematical Science department has been awarded a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant for a five-year study that aims to replicate some of the fascinating behaviours displayed by biological molecules and microorganisms, and design a new class of man-made materials.

Loughborough University has announced it is to establish a new research centre focused on improving the way mathematics is taught in schools and colleges. The Centre for Mathematical Cognition (CMC) will be based at the Mathematics Education Centre (MEC) – one of the most successful groups of mathematics education researchers in the UK.

A new online tool developed by researchers from Loughborough University, the University of Leicester, the University of Nottingham, Ulster University and University College London aims to increase primary teachers’ awareness of the link between preterm birth and educational difficulties as well as give practical teaching advice for helping those most at risk.

Dr Camilla Gilmore, a Reader in Mathematical Cognition, has been named Prize Lecturer for 2019 by the Experimental Psychology Society. Dr Gilmore will give her EPS lecture in July 2020 at the Experimental Psychology Society meeting in Swansea.

Professor Caucher Birkar visited the University on Friday 15 March to present a lecture titled ‘Log Calabi-Yau fibrations’, as part of the Kodaira weekend workshop in Algebraic Geometry hosted by the IAS. The Kodaira weekend workshop formed part of the IAS Geometry Theme, led by Dr Hamid Ahmadinezhad from the Department of Mathematical Sciences.

Loughborough mathematician Dr Emiliano Renzi and the Storm Force team will be showcasing their online game at the Nottingham Festival of Science and Curiosity. The game draws on more than Dr Renzi's extensive research into the deadly storm surges that cause coastal flooding, and explains how to spot an approaching surge and avert disaster.

Dr Elisa Postinghel, of the School of Science, has been named a recipient of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) New Investigator Award and has been provided with funding of £203,354 to develop new mathematical methods to describe and classify shapes in four or more dimensions.
